Palatka, Fl (look in the middle of these 2 charts)
Palatka and the St Johns River have a long history. The entire river was inhabited by Native Americans of course at one time. This particular neck of the woods was occupied by the Timucuan Indian Tribe. Below is an excerpt from Wikipedia:- "The area was once the domain of the Timucuan nation, two tribes of which existed in the Palatka region under chiefs Saturiba and Utina. They fished bass and mullets, or hunted deer, turkeys, bear and opossum. Others farmed beans, corn, melons, squash and tobacco. But war and disease devastated the tribes. Florida would then be taken over by the Seminole, who called the location Pilo-taikita, meaning boat (pilo) ford (taikita), or "boat crossing." The St Johns River is a north flowing river and considered a "lazy river". We spot interesting wildlife every single day we are here. During our 6 month stay so far we have spotted several alligators, several snakes (various kinds and most poisonous), there is an otter makes his home in the same cove as our marina, baby turtles, really big turtles, crabs, manatee, catfish, bass, some kind of fish that jumps 3 times out of the water every now and again which we've dubbed the "kangaroo fish", blue heron, great egrets, owls and hawks to name a few. Apologies for the poor charts - we really need to find a better source for our charts. The flags on the right hand side are from countries we've visited. Some are b.c.- before children when we were carefree backpackers! |
